My key messages on Women, Diversity
& a new Leadership Culture

  • "Oh, not enough women had the courage to apply for this top post" - whenever somebody says this, we need to put the question: is it possible that the work environment in many board rooms is simply not very attractive for women - and also for many men?

Instead of asking women to “toughen up” in their careers, we need to make top positions more attractive for women and diverse leaders. It is the job of top level leadership to change work culture and to break up the glass ceiling “from above”.

  • We will only overcome the “alpha culture” of leadership if we dare to re-define who gets promoted. Organisations that continue to encourage women to “toughen up” and become “more courageous” need to re-define the incentives of “success”.

Are we open to promote more humble, vulnerable and kind leaders who dare to express emotions, to admit mistakes and to collaborate instead of compete? I truly believe that authentic leadership is what is so desperately needed in most workplaces in order to lay the ground for new work cultures that are open for diverse forms of leadership - by both men and women.

  • It’s not enough to say “Now, it’s the women’s turn” and to expect men to simply step aside to make space for more women leaders. I believe that true change towards work environments that are more open for diverse, authentic leaders will only be possible if we have those on board who are currently in the majority in leadership positions: men.

Diversity will only work if men feel part of this transition. If men get rewarded in their careers for diversity management skills. And - most of all - if men can use this amazing opportunity of reshaping the idea of leadership and success for themselves as well: away from the pressure to be a „tough alpha leader“ towards a leader who can be a father, a sensitive soul and a part-time boss - AND successful. Because that‘s diversity, too.

A powerful speaker.

A powerful message.

Empowered people.

  • The Leadership We Need in 2026

At a time of global instability, what if our most powerful response to the loud voices that try to divide and intimidate us was not fear - but empathy and warmth? This speech is a reminder of our power as individuals at a time when the very foundations of our democracies seem to shake. It is a powerful inspiration and shift of perspective to keep our spirits up in 2026.

  • Why women don’t have to “break the glass ceiling”

In this Keynote Speech I lift the misunderstanding on “women empowerment”: still too often, we expect from women to “just toughen up” in their careers instead of looking at how to make top positions more attractive for the needs of women and diverse leadership styles.

As your Keynote Speaker, let me show three ways forward to change that. Spoiler alert: the solution is not yet another “women empowerment academy”…but a powerful perspective change to take action.

  • Re-defining leadership: How to overcome "alpha" work cultures and work better together

This is a “no taboo” Keynote Speech: For too long, we took management styles for granted that relied on pressure, control and an outdated idea of a “successful leader”: the unemotional “tough cookie”. The result: many talented colleagues disengage, don’t feel seen and leave.

This speech is an invitation to see the strength in a leadership culture that is open for vulnerable, authentic and even kind leaders to succeed. How can we get there together so that more colleagues can thrive in their full potential?

  • How to bring men on board for more diversity?

Let us talk about the “elephant in the room”: In this keynote speech, I will show how men will benefit when more women are in top positions - and three ideas on how to involve male leaders on this important path.

How to make diversity a business case and a breakthrough for men as well - instead of an annoying “nice-to-have”?

My intention with every speech is to inspire a sense of possibility in the room.

To make every woman in the audience realise how powerful she already is.

To inspire male leaders to realise how much they will gain when more diverse leaders are in power.

To inspire every decision-maker that the way forward not only possible, but a win-win situation.

Helene’s experience

Helene Banner brings with her the experience of advising women and men in power positions, of mentoring women in career transitions and supporting them in high-level work environments in which they feel treated like „outsiders“ because of their gender.

She created her women mentoring and consulting business after her 10-year experience of being a young woman in senior communication advisor positions herself: at 29 years she was the spokesperson of a European Commissioner in Brussels and later the speechwriter of Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission. In July 2019 she advised and accompanied now-President Ursula von der Leyen in the weeks when she became the first woman in this office.

In these positions, she observed how power is distributed in organisations, how empowered an organisation becomes when the „image of power“ changes at its leadership level and how both men and women can be supported in this change.

More detailed bio

Video message: Ladies and Gentlemen, let us change what “successful leadership” is.

Most workplaces discourage us to come to the office with our natural strengths. They train us to "toughen up", to become "harder" and "more visible" in the race to the top. In this short video, I share how we can change work cultures in order to reward authenticity, empathy and imperfection - for both men and women to thrive with their full talent.
